The Waterford Greenway opened in 2017 is a disused 46km long disused railway line which provides a car-free pathway starting in Waterford City and end on the coast at Dungarvan in Co. Waterford, Ireland. The stunning route provides great views of the Comeragh Mountains, eleven bridges, three viaducts, through a 400m-long tunnel, along the  banks of the River Suir to the  beaches of Waterford’s Copper Coast. This Greenway is  open to cyclists, walkers, runner.

The route features many historic places including viking sites, medieval ruins and Norman castles and disused railway stations.  Also famine workhouses and an Ice Age rock believed to have mythical and mysterious powers.  There are stunning views along the route and great places to stop including Mount Congreve Gardens, one of the great gardens of the world, and  Dungarvan castle, 800 years old. Kilmeaden features a heritage railway train.

The route starts at Waterford city and there are a number of car parks near the start point and various bike rental companies offering conventional bikes, e-bikes, children’s trailers and even tandems. For rental bikes  there is a free shuttle bus service which drops off/ collects  riders from Waterford, Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan. The route can easily be done in a day and there are plenty of refreshment stops along the way.

Coffee and cake is available at Coach House Coffee in Kilmacthomas. It is an old famine workhouse and offers various items, including floury blaas, gooey brownies and carrot cake.

If camping is your thing there is Caseys Caravan & Camping Park in Dungarvan. Fancy glamping, try Nire Valley Glamping or Ballyvolane Glamping. If its B&B you want then Tannery Townhouse.Wanting a hotel hotel, try Dooley’s Hotel or Fitzwilton Hotel. Lots of Airbnb options if you prefer.

The Waterford Greenway is part of the Atlantic Coast Route. This is a European long-distance  cycling route which passes through Norway, the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.

Helmet , water, goodies, mobile phone, backpack, waterproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, padded shorts if you are doing the full route.
