The Limerick Greenway in Limerick is a 24 mile off-road cycling route along a dissused railway line connecting Rathkeale, Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale. The route can be used by cyclists, runners and walkers.
The Greenway can be cycled easily in a day by riders with a little cycling experience or beginners can choose to cycle certain sections.
Rathkeale to Ardagh – 5.5 miles / 9km
Start. In Rathkeale the designated access point is to the left just off the N21
This section starts at the Irish Palatine Museum and crosses the River Deel. Things to see on this section include ruins of the 15th century and with a short detour from the route you can visit Cahermoyle House. This section is flat.
Ardagh to Newcastle West – 2.5 miles / 4km
Start. In Ardagh the entrance is at the railway bridge on the L7001 with parking available at the community Centre. This section is mostly flat.
Newcastle West to Barnagh – 6 miles / 10km
Entrances at Bishop Court and the other is near Gaelscoil Ó Dóghair Recycling Centre on the R521. This section has a gentle uphill climb.
Barnagh to Templeglantine Village – 2.5 miles / 4km
Start just off the N21 at Glendarragh with services available in Templeglantine Village. On this section you can include a trip to Glenquin Castle and Killeedy Castle.
Templeglantine Village to Abbeyfeale to Kerry border – 5.5 miles / 9km to Abbeyfeale & 1.8 miles / 3km to Kerry border.
Start in Templeglantine at the car-parking area behind Halla Inse Bán/Community Hall.
Obviously you can start the Limerick Greenway at any point along its route. The main access points are as follows
Rathkeale
At the old railway station which is now the Irish Palatine Museum.
Ardagh
At the railway bridge on the local L7001 road. Parking is available at the community Centre.
Newcastle West
There are two entrances. One at Bishop Court, the other near Gaelscoil Ó Dóghair Recycling Centre.
Barnagh
Parking at the N21 westbound lay-by.
Templeglantine
Park at Halla Inse Bán which is on the local L21006. You then have to ride approximately 1km north along this road to access the Greenway.
Devon Road
At Devon Road Cross turn north off the N21/R515 junction and go along the L7059.
Abbeyfeale
In the town centre turn right from the N21 onto the R524 Athea Road.

Parking is available in the following places
Rathkeale – There is a Greenway car park located beside the Irish Palatine Centre, just off R518.
Ardagh – Parking is available at the Ardagh Station House, turn off R523.
Newcastle West – Park in the Newcastle West Business Park, off the R521 onto Station Road.
Templeglantine – Rear of Halla Inse Bán, on the L21006 (turn off N21 at Halla).
Abbeyfeale – Greenway car park off the R524 road, to north of the town.
