The Cinder Track is a picturesque coastal route from Scarborough to Whitby. Its a former railway line which was used from 1885 – 1965 but closed due to economic reasons. The Cinder Track was made from cinders rather than crushed stone hence the name. The Cinder Track starts in Scarborough at  Sainsbury’s car park and in general is well signposted along its route.

It boasts spectacular coastal views along its route but our own favourite is the view across to Robin Hoods Bay after leaving Ravenscar. Other notable views include Whitby Abbey and the impressive 120 feet high Larpool Viaduct over the River Esk in Whitby.

There are plenty of refreshments stops along the route including a cafe, hotel and National Trust Cafe at Ravenscar and various cafes and pubs in Robin Hoods Bay. There is also the Hayburn Wyke in just off the trail before Ravenscar. You can ride down into Robin Hoods Bay but be aware its a very steep climb back up to the trail !

The Cinder Track from  Scarborough to Whitby is 21.5 miles and is easily possible for strong cyclists to ride there and back in a day. Alternatively you could ride up to Whitby and stay the night before riding back the next day. The surface is generally good with a few bumpy sections. Its not a flat route but most of the gradients are relatively gentle, The main climb is the one from Robin Hoods Bay back up to Ravenscar which is around 2.5 miles long.
