Amsterdam Forest (Amsterdamse Bos)
Distance, 30kms
Start, Amsterdam Centraal
The Amterdam Forest paths are dedicated to cycling, walking, or horse-riding, This trail is probably the best in the world for cyclists. It is triple in size of New York’s Central Park and has 50kms of dedicated tarmac cycle paths that are wide and smooth. The routes take you through wooded areas, grassland, reed lands and open water.
Some of the highlights en route are the Amstel River, Amsterdamse Bos Forest, Rowing Lake, Petting Zoo, Riekermolen Windmill.
The park is located to the south of Amsterdam, in the Amstelveen district.
The trail from Amsterdam Centraal Station goes south through populated neighbourhoods and then south east following the Amstel River. A welcome stop on the route is the petting zoo in the Amsterdamse Bos where you can view the animals, and get refreshments.
Starting from Amsterdam Centraal Station, go to the east side of the station and then move south across the waterway and across the main road called Prins Hendrikkade. After passing the Schreierstoren, a historical 15th century monument, go right onto Geldersekade. A few minutes later you arrive at Nieuwmarkt Square with a building called the Waag (weighing station) building.
Cycle around the right side of the Waag and carry on on the opposite side of the canal when the street name becomes Kloveniersburgwal. At the 3rd bridge, turn left and cross the canal onto Staalstraat. Continue along as the bike path crosses two other bridges before going right and then making a left along the Amstel River.
Wear good cycling shoes.
