Although E-bike batteries will degrade over time and charges, it will last longer if its looked after. There a number of things you can do to extend the life of a battery.
1. Store the battery in a dry location, at room temperature and avoid extreme heat or cold.
2. Always charge the battery indoors preferably in a room with a smoke alarm.
3. Dont charge the battery after every ride unless you need the full capacity for your next ride. A battery will have a finite number of charges before it is no longer servicable. Some manufacturers only guarantee batteries up to a certain number of cycles or charges.
4. If you dont plan on using your bike for an extended period store the battery at 60% capacity.
5. Try not to overload your battery as this may shorten the battery life.
6. Use a thermal battery cover if riding in cold weather.
7. Always use the correct charger and dont leave a battery on charge once its fully charged.
8. If possible remove your e-bike battery before cleaning your bike and wipe it down with a damp cloth. Dont wash your bike with a pressure washer escpially with the battrey in place. Clean the battery contacts with a electrical contact cleaner spray.
9. Never leave a battery nearly empty for an extended period of time. The battery management system (BMS) draws a small current to keep operating, which can flatten a nearly empty battery so damaging the battery.
10. Handle the battery with care and avoid severe vibration and shock.
11. If you ride regularly on wet, salted roads in winter, you should clean your electrical contact points and the battery’s mounting point on the bike.
